Resumo : Traditional analytical models of ultimate airport runway capacity typically rely on already known operational procedures and runway dependency. This dissertation analyses how the steeper and the staggered approach procedures combined might affect airport capacity by investigating a scarcely exploited type of runway system: open V shaped runways. With this type of runway configuration, this dissertation proposes an analytical model considering steeper and staggered approach procedures which allow safe simultaneous approaches at both open V shaped runways. Some of the airports with this runway configuration are Edmonton Airport, Jacksonville Airport and Las Vegas Airport, but the developed model is applied at Rio de Janeiro/Galea?o Airport due to its importance in the Brazilian's air transport (second busiest international airport in Brazil). The results indicate that steeper and staggered approach procedures applied simultaneously and the reduction of lateral separation from 5nm to 3nm for Galea?o Airport can increase the airport runway system ultimate capacity up to sixty four percent when operating a mix composed of fifty percent of arrivals and departures.
